Unusual Dietary Supplements That Can Significantly Improve Your Health

If you’ve visited me for facial services in my office you’ve become aware over time that I try to keep ahead of all kinds of health topics from wellness to prevention to hormones. All of these elements balanced together can make your body (and therefor your skin which is the largest organ in the body) remain healthy, strong and beautiful. It would be great if we got sufficient vitamins and minerals in our food but unfortunately our soil is becoming depleted over time and we simply are not getting them in our diet the way that we should even if we eat extremely healthily. There are a ton of supplements on the market today and you can go crazy researching them but I thought I’d let you know about some secret supplements that I use effectively in my regimen. Please do your homework to see if these are right for you and more importantly, purchase a quality product not just the cheap stuff at Walgreens!

Magnesium

I have to be honest, I absolutely love Magnesium. I’m sure you’ve all heard about it but did you know that you are extremely likely to be deficient in this amazing mineral and your deficiency could be wreaking havoc on your body.

Conditions linked to low magnesium levels include:magnesium-supplement

  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Migraines and Pain
  • Leg Cramps and Backaches
  • IBS
  • Strokes, Head Issues
  • Cholesterol Issues and Hypertension
  • Obesity, Syndrome X and Diabetes
  • PMS and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
  • Infertility, Preeclampsia and Cerebral Palsy
  • Osteoporosis and Kidney Stones
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia
  • Asthma

Now, I have to warn you to tread lightly as you put Magnesium into your system or it’ll go haywire. Ease yourself into a high dose (most of us need 600-800mg to get us balanced) by using Magnesium oil or slow stepping oral doses till you hit your ideal dose. I wrote an extensive blog about this mineral some time ago, check it out here for a ton more information on this mineral. Here is another great website about Magnesium as well.

Vitamin K2 (Mk-7)

k2This obscure vitamin has been dropping in our diets since fat became the enemy. Found in high fat animal protein like eggs, meat and cheeses, for many dieting folks or vegetarians/vegans you are likely very low in this vitamin. Vitamin K must be present for the blood to clot and Vitamin K1 is much easier to get into our diets but Vitamin K2 has a risk of being too low in most people.

Vitamin K2 plays an essential role in the binding of calcium to proteins in the body. It helps your body use calcium far more effectively so supplementing it is less necessary. The best supplemental form of Vitamin K2 is called MK-7 and I recommend finding it in liquid capsule form.

Personally, I’ve always had the worst teeth. I’ve fought cavities, tooth sensitivity and much more for as long as I can remember. A few years ago I learned about Vitamin K2 and honestly I haven’t had a new cavity since. Now, there’s not much research that says that this work for certain but it has seriously improved my dental health. But Vitamin K2 does far more than just that!

Vitamin K2 also helps with:

  • Bone Health ie Osteoporosis Prevention
  • Heart Health
  • Prevention of Calcium Deposits in Arteries
  • Prevention of Liver and Prostate Cancers

Boswellia Serrata Extract or Frankincense Essential OilBoswelliaGraphic

Lots of folks have begun understanding the benefits of Turmeric in the reduction of inflammation in the body, which is the cause of the majority of health issues that we all have. But Turmeric has a sister supplement that is remarkable as well, Boswellia Serrata or Frankincense Oil. Boswellia is a tree found in the Middle East and Northern Africa. A compound can be extracted from this tree to produce Boswellia Extract or Frankincense Oil. This amazing compound contains a ton of health benefits including:

  • Lowering inflammation and Free Radical Damage (which ages us)
  • Reducing Joint and Arthritis Pain
  • Fights Cancer (brain, breast, colon, pancreatic, prostate and stomach)
  • Strengthens Immunity From Illness
  • Improves Hormone Balance
  • Speeds Up Wound Healing
  • Prevents AutoImmune Disorders

Personally I take it to reduce body inflammation overall to prevent many of the issues above. Especially because Estheticians have a high risk of arthritis, I’d love to avoid that problem in my future. But we can all benefit from inflammation reduction. From a skin perspective it reduces redness, acne, skin irritations and much more if our bodies are less inflamed. From a health perspective it greatly reduces the chances of cancer, general illness and more!

Combined with a Turmeric supplement these 2 are anti-inflammatory powerhouses that can significantly improve your health and wellness! For an in-depth explanation about this supplement check out this article.

Turmeric (Curcumin)

I’m sure you have started hearing more about Turmeric and it’s amazing health benefits. This amazing spice used effectively can have a ton of benefits to your body. One of it’s major benefits is its ability to slow aging in areas like the brain and skin, keeping you youthful longer in thought AND appearance. It does all of this through it anti-inflammatory benefits. There is a TON of research about how even low grade body inflammation leads to massive health issues in most people. Quite frankly, if you suffer from mild to moderate body aches and joint pain, you likely have significant inflammation issues.

Turmeric helps improve the body by:

  • Supporting Health Cells in the Brain to Improve Cognitive Function
  • Promoting a Better Body Response to Inflammation
  • Reducing Heart Inflammation Which Increases Healthy Heart Function
  • Eases Joint and Muscle Aches
  • Promotes a Healthy Mood
  • Fights Fine Lines and Wrinkles in the Skin
  • Promotes Soft, Smooth, Glowing Skin

When combined with Boswellia Serrata, it is unbeatable for inflammation reduction! Read more about Turmeric here…

Collagen Powder (also called Gelatin)

We are finding out more and more about how we age and loss of collagen not just in the skin is a big component of aging. Breaking down of collagen in joints contributes to aches and brittle bones in the future. Taking a couple scoops of this flavorless powder daily can slow the break down of collagen in your entire body.

Benefits include:collagen powder

  • Improvement in Skin Health and Tightness of Skin
  • Builds Strong Teeth, Hair and Nails
  • Prevents Cellulite and Stretch Marks
  • Helps with Liver Detox and Weight Loss
  • Improves Digestion and Metabolism
  • Improves Adrenal Function and Hormone Balance
  • Reduces Allergy Issues/Sensitivities

My personal favorite brand of this product is Great Lakes (pssst….the pharmacist on the first floor of my office building sells this if you’d like to grab it on your next visit). The beef source for it is top notch and it’s completely flavorless! Read on to learn more about it…

A High-Quality Probiotic

probiotic-bacteriaI’m sure I’m not the first to tell you about Probiotics but what I do want to tell you is that you probably need ALOT of them to get the benefit and quite frankly the quality is very important as well. It took me months to work up to a proper dose of Probiotic but since I have, I’ve noticed significant changes in my body. First and foremost my sugar cravings have not only evaporated but occasionally I find sweets gross. Yes, I said gross!! I literally picked up a dark chocolate square with caramel in it (it used to be my favorite), took one bite and gave it away because it didn’t taste good!!! Now the only thing I’ve changed in the last six months on my supplements is the quality and quantity of Probiotic so it has to be the reason.

From the Global Healing Site, the following health benefits are associated with the intake of daily servings of probiotics:

  • Enhanced immune system response
  • Alleviates negative affects of taking many types of antibiotics
  • Calms colon irritation following surgery
  • Helps to support healthy skin in youth
  • Increased ability to digest food
  • Therapeutic for upper respiratory complaints
  • Reduces lactose intolerance
  • Reduces incidence of yeast infections, vaginitis and candidiasis
  • Increases ability to assimilate nutrients from food
  • Alleviates many common digestive disorders such as constipation, diarrhea and IBS
  • Acts as a remedy for bad breath (halitosis)
  • Increases ability to synthesize vitamin B
  • Increases ability to absorb calcium

That’s a whole lot of bang for an inexpensive buck, even the nicest probiotics aren’t terribly expensive! Want to know more? Read here or read here to help you find the best probiotic for you…

I’m not someone that takes 100 different supplements a day but these guys pack some great value and benefits so you might want to check them out!
